Sororities are a large part of Greek life history in American universities and instill meaningful values in women that help them thrive throughout their lives. Women in sororities have been recognized for going above and beyond and achieving amazing things. In honor of Women’s history month, dive into the lives of past sorority sisters to see what may be in store for your future!

Annette Greenfield Strauss – Alpha Epsilon Phi

Alpha Epsilon Phi’s mission is to inspire and support exemplary women. Annette, an influential member of the sisterhood, was the first woman and first Jewish mayor of Dallas, Texas. She also has The Annette Strauss Artist Square named after her in the Arts District of downtown Dallas.

Mary Gladwin – Delta Gamma

Mary Gladwin was a Red Cross nurse, decorated by the United States, Russian, Japanese and Serbian governments. She served in 3 wars and was one of the first recipients to receive the Florence Nightingale Medal for making distinguished contributions to the nursing industry.

Geraldine “Jerrie” Fredritz Mock – Phi Mu

You’ve all heard of Amelia Earhart right? Well what about Jerrie?! Jerrie, as many people called her, was the first woman to fly around the world solo. She also has 2 life size statues built in her honor in Ohio.

Susan Helms – Chi Omega

Chi Omega sisters have represented the STEM field for years. Susan Helms is one of the many sisters who has taken on a career in the STEM field; she’s an astronaut! Susan began in the Air Force and worked her way up, where she was then selected by NASA to become an astronaut in July 1991. She participated in 5 space flights and eventually became Lieutenant General in 2011.

Rachel Buehler – Kappa Kappa Gamma

This Stanford graduate turned out to become a USA Soccer Olympic Team Gold Medalist! On top of that giant accomplishment, she also went to medical school after retiring from soccer and now practices as a doctor in California.
